I did something amazing today, or at least I think so. I read something in another language for the first time.
Now, I can “read” quite a few languages by translating the sentence into English in my head, which is a time consuming process. (German [decently well], Latin [okay], Italian, French, and Spanish [those three not so well], if you were curious) But today, without thinking, I read something in German. “At the end of the day, they go back to the city, because you’re not supposed to live in the small garden houses in the Schreber gardens.”
It took me a second to even realize what I’d done, and I was so shocked that I went back and re-translated it to English in my head, which I hadn’t done the first time. The first time I just understood it.
It was a cool feeling. It was the first true time I felt like I had, just maybe, made a major step towards becoming bilingual. At least as far as reading goes.
